I’ve gulped three flutes of champagne and stuffed two huge waffles down my throat, but I still haven’t calmed down. How can I possibly get through this unscathed? And how is Gia okay with getting absolutely nothing done today by way of wedding planning?

After breakfast, Gia hugs her brother goodbye like he’s going off to war. As we step inside the elevator together, he finally speaks. “Why don’t I walk you home across the park?” He seems cheerful.

“Sure.”

“If you tell me there’s nothing going on between you and that guy Gia mentioned, I’ll believe you.”

“There’s nothing going on,” I say, and he takes hold of my hand.

Now that we’re not in front of Gia, I’m breathing a little better too. It’s too hot for a walk in the park, but I’m glad to be alone with him. Suddenly, he makes us stop, tugs at me gently, and points up to a tree. Perched on a high branch is a white owl.

“I’ve never seen an owl in the park,” he whispers.

“Me neither,” I whisper back, as though the sounds of the city haven’t made it budge but our voices could spook it away forever.

“It’s beautiful.”

We watch the owl for a moment in awe.

“What did you think of the song?” Fernando turns toward me and takes both my hands.

“It was beautiful.” If I hadn’t been afraid of your sister finding out about us, I would have enjoyed it more.

“It’s yours. I wrote it for you.”

“Really? I loved it.”

“I’m ready to tell my sister about us.”

“Uh, but I’m not. Not yet. I mean—”

“Being in a room with you and not being able to tell the world is too difficult.”

“Well, sure, I agree. Really. But I just think we should wait a few weeks. She has the wedding to worry about. And so many arrangements still to do and family coming in. What if things don’t work out between us and she gets all excited for nothing?” I am super impressed with my response. All good reasons.

“What about the other scenario?” He does have a great smile.

“What other scenario?”

“The one where it does work out between us.”

“Let’s wait until after the wedding,” I say, mostly because I don’t want to accept for a moment that I will ever have to come clean to Gia about this. There’s gotta be a way out of this that doesn’t involve me telling her about Fernando and me. Even if we end up getting married. Does she really have to know?

“Okay. I trust you.” I can see that having a time frame is calming him down. He looks back up at the owl. “I think he’s trying to tell me something.”

“Really? Since when can you communicate telepathically with owls?”

“It’s a gift.”

“So, what is he saying?”

“He wants me to play your song.”

“Ah…of course he does. So, how are you going to do that?”

“Well.” Fernando carefully rolls the sleeves of my T-shirt up over my shoulders. “First, I must prepare my instrument.” What’s he doing? He lifts my arms like I’m a living scarecrow and whispers, “Now don’t move.
